Help Us Pass a Strong Plastic Bag Bill in NJ!
Good news! The Senate has passed S864 to ban plastic bags, styrofoam food containers, and require straws to be provided only upon request. Now it is up to the Assembly to pass a consistent bill with no weakening amendments for the strongest bill possible!
Waste and litter from single-use plastics and other disposable products are creating an environmental crisis. We dispose of 100 billion plastic bags every year in the U.S., over 4 billion of which are used and disposed of in NJ. These bags and other single-use disposables are a threat to our health and environment, harming marine life, clogging storm drains, and releasing toxins into our air and water when disposed of by incineration and landfill.
As a state that considers itself an environmental champion, it is embarrassing that several of our neighboring states have passed plastics bans while New Jersey falls behind. This bill has overwhelming public support and over 50 towns and 2 counties have passed local ordinances. The Senate has been very proactive in passing some version of the bill in two consecutive legislative sessions.
Take Action! Tell Assembly Speaker Coughlin and your Assembly state representatives to do all they can to pass S864/A1978.
