Email SUBJECT: S3907 – Protect Libraries

Dear LD13 Representative,

As a constituent, I am writing to express my support for prohibiting book bans in New Jersey libraries and schools. S3907 would protect students, communities, and librarians from the kinds of regressive attacks on diversity and academic freedom spreading across the country.

Municipalities and school districts across the state are facing aggressive action by a loud minority of activists advocating for the removal of content by and about LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals. Libraries have increasingly been placed on the front lines of these attacks as part of a coordinated campaign to politicize New Jersey’s nonpartisan school boards. As demonstrated by the recent Attorney General filing, actions taken in multiple school districts across the state have demonstrated the clear need and urgency to guarantee protections that bolster academic freedom, existing school policy, and librarian professional discretion.

I hope we share the ideal that we cannot allow one group to determine what is acceptable reading for ALL New Jerseyans. We should have the opportunity to determine what reading is best for our families and ourselves, without someone else limiting our freedoms.

Please extend your support for this bill by becoming a co-sponsor and supporting it as it progresses through the Legislature. Thank you for your support of New Jersey’s talented librarians and diverse school communities.

Thank you and best regards,
